(June 18, 2009) With the 14th annual Nantucket Film Festival getting underway this evening with the red-carpet opening of “Cold Souls,” the programming staff of the festival has chosen, if somewhat reluctantly, a short-list of must-sees for this year’s four-day event.

“We almost find it impossible to choose in something like this because we believe in each of these films and love them all,” said Mystelle Brabbée, the festival’s artistic director, who along with executive director Colin Stanfield and their staff sorted through more than 700 films before arriving at a final cut of about 40.

With her hesitation voiced, Brabbée made her choices along with Livia Bloom, the festival’s new programming director. Bloom, a long-time friend and colleague of Stanfield, joined the film-festival team in 2008 from the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City where she was a film curator.

Their picks come from the many entries submitted by filmmakers as well as others chosen after being seen at major festivals around the globe.
