Film Festival box office opens Sunday

By Joshua B. Gray

I&M Staff Writer

(June 11, 2009) With the 14th annual Nantucket Film Festival set to open a week from today, many Nantucketers may be wondering what this celebration, known for tipping its hat to the screenwriters in the movie industry, has to offer them.

From the many screenings spread out over the four-day festival – it opens Thursday evening with the red-carpet premiere of “Cold Souls,” attended by star Paul Giamatti and writer/director Sophie Barths – to a handful of star-studded events, there is an array of possibilities in a fairly wide price range.

For an event that in its history has brought around 10,000 visitors to the island each year, finding suitable screenings or the right soirée can present a challenge to the casual participant. When not in the “the know” about this summer’s biggest blockbusters or what the next indie sleeper hit may be, how does one best navigate the 40 films (shorts and features) showing at this year’s festival; or the plethora of discussions, panels and other entertainment available?
