Nantucket High School students read to elementary-school students last Tuesday to celebrate Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday.

(March 9, 2010) Nantucket Elementary School students celebrated the Read Across America literacy campaign last week with events that culminated on the birthday of the late author Theodore "Dr. Seuss" Geisel.

Read Across America is a year-round literacy campaign designed to motivate children to read by making it fun, said NES librarian Laura Coburn.

NES students celebrated by listening to Dr. Seuss’ book passages during morning announcements and guessing which book it came from. They were greeted each day by a Seuss-related morning message as they entered school, and were treated to a slice of red and white Seuss cake during lunch on March 2. The highlight of the day came when 75 students from the high school walked down to NES, selected a library picture book, were escorted to each classroom, and read to the elementary students, Coburn said.
