Nantucket Race Week kicks off Friday with eight days of premier sailboat racing, including several regattas for classic 12-meters like these above racing last year.

Had it been a regatta other than the Opera House Cup, Eric Holch’s Alerion Owl, skippered by Garry Hoyt, might not have won last year’s race, beating out professional crews on much larger professional boats.
But because the Opera House Cup, anchoring Nantucket’s annual Race Week, honors traditional, wooden sailboats (versus more high-tech, fiberglass vessels) the underdog used the pure skill of its sailors to pull through.
“I’ve raced a lot of regattas, but Nantucket has its own special charm, and there’s a tradition behind the wooden boats that fiberglass boats don’t have.
