Aguiar steps out of retirement – again – to take the helm at elementary school

(Dec. 30, 2009) Joe Aguiar stepped out of retirement to accept the elementary-school princi pal position the same year he was named Senior Citizen of the Year, picking up the gauntlet to help steer the district’s largest school out of state-mandated corrective action in the wake of a full-blown staffing controversy while bracing for another brutal budget season.

Aguiar, 72, shunned retire ment once before to assume the high-school principal position from 2000 to 2002. This time, his arrival helped soothe raw feelings following the abrupt and highly contentious departure of former principal John Miller two weeks before school let out in June. Aguiar has already been verbally offered a one-year con tract extension to remove his interim status, although that contract has not yet been formally accepted.
