Raindrops keep falling: Inside the new airport

By Jason Graziadei

I&M Senior Writer

After the thrill of opening Nantucket Memorial Airport’s new passenger terminal subsided last year, airport officials soon experienced another emotion: frustration.

The building leaked when it rained. Not just in one spot, but many. Despite spending $29 million on the terminal expansion project, airport employees are now forced to bring out buckets to collect the drips from the ceiling anytime there is a wind-driven rain.

Airport manager Al Peterson said he was unsure exactly how many leaks there were in the new terminal, but could think of at least four off the top of his head. He said they have occurred primarily where the old terminal building meets the new construction.

“We have a few aggravating leaks, primarily with the wind-driven rain,” Peterson said. “They’re being addressed by the construction manager. It’s not a matter of flooding, it’s nothing major, but enough that it’s aggravating.”

Peterson said there has been only minor damage due to the leaks, and that the general contractor on the project, Skanska USA, is working to address the issue. Any repair work will not cost the airport any money, he added.
